The idea for the creation of the play "White Nights" was prompted by the need to create a chamber theater stage version of the sentimental novel of the same name by F. M. Dostoevsky, where the main characters, the Dreamer and Nastenka, are archetypes of two artistic dreamer souls.
Trapped by their biographies in real lives, as it is usually called the fateful determination of the course of events, the two of them meet, over the course of several evenings, while the white nights in Petersburg last. During those meetings, the Dreamer, who is also a true artist and for whom the world of music is his cradle and his greatest freedom, opens the question of, dreaming, of life, the way it should be, according to him. He encourages their, joint dreaming, with Nastenka, who, due to the numerous, prohibitions, throughout life, feels most free while dancing, especially since she is 18 years old. The two of them trust each other and surrender to dreaming, during those meetings, no matter how complicated the circumstances are, especially when it comes to love or ideal love.
On the other hand, the author Dostoevsky himself poses the question: can every person follow their dreams and do we give ourselves that freedom and make that choice in order to be free and authentic? Or do we surrender to the will of social norms, stereotypes, moral codes and civic judgments, where we destroy our own dreams and even sell our love, or do we become its traitors, just to be in the place of generally accepted social, moral, civic and even cultural norms? Do we thereby unconsciously, but still tirelessly, climb to the peaks of the material worlds, but in terms of spirituality and freedom we remain average and quickly grow old, even in our youth, following the path of self-rejection and non-acceptance of our own self?
Both according to Dostoevsky's work and according to the play, we are reminded that few seem to have the courage, but also the opportunity, to follow their dream, the ideal, no matter what it is, so the role of the Dreamer or the anonymous artist, in the play is just an example of that, (even when he is unrecognized, and may be just an ordinary artistic soul, such as the role of Nastenka)… that it is still worth playing that role or dreaming that dream, even if for a moment of bliss. That one single moment of happiness, bliss, will always shine and no sadness, pain, reproach or anger will be able to melt it.
But, most often, the artist dreams Alone, even if that Dream is: to meet Someone.
