The play "Catatonia" confronts us with the cruelty of modern society, through extreme situations and characters thrown to the margins of society. Through 24 different stories and a large number of different characters, issues related to patriarchy, the justice system, facing criminal prosecution, deprivation of freedom, prison conditions, facing a crime, personal transformation when questioning one's own guilt, personal transformation in a state of remorse are problematized...
"Catatonia" shocks with the cruelty of the situations and dialogues and unscrupulously points the finger at the systemic anomalies. The language of the play is fierce, cruel, but realistic. Alice Birch's dramatic writing is a continuation of the era of Sarah Kane, Mark Ravenhill, Caryl Churchill and other representatives of "in your face" dramaturgy, but viewed from a modern perspective.
In the enhanced dramatic template in which each scene remains a separate "story", the connection between the scenes is sensed through the themes it addresses, sometimes through a line, sometimes through a given situation and atmosphere, sometimes due to the need to enhance one or more dramatic situations, during dramatic pauses or in what is not there, but is still present.
